In May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that “Titanium dioxide: E171 is no longer considered safe when used as a food additive.” EFSA shows concern regarding genotoxicity, refers to the ability of a chemical substance to damage DNA which have the potential to cause cancer.

Titanium dioxide is banned in EU, but not in the US. Titanium dioxide can be found in food categories like gum and other candies, frozen food especially frozen pizzas, and pantry items like salad dressings and frosting.

You can use Alertrak to find food without Titanium dioxide. Go to Account, Allergy/Health Criteria, Intolerance, and select Artificial Colorings. Then click on the yellow icon to only select Titanium dioxide. That’s it. As you search and browse, the app will filter out products with Titanium dioxide.
